It will make you angry and sad. The main target of Dr North's fire is the ill-judged ERRF sneaked in by Blair on which vast tranches of defence equipment spending were lavished (the supercarriers, Eurofighter, FRES) at the expense of immediately necessary adequately protected patrol vehicles etc. Both parties get flak - who initiated Nimrod MR4 and Sentinel among many other? - for the waste of public money that has cost many lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. Normally the military are criticised for fighting the last war, this time the generals are fighting the next one. One ray of sunshine is the Urgent Operational Requirement procurement process that enables MRAP vehicles and other necessary kit to be bought relatively quickly. However, the error of adding on instead of designing in armour protection is continuing in many vehicles like the Viking replacement, for example. What was needed was a fleet of vehiles like Mastiff and smaller (the similar RG-31 was sold as surplus after Bosnia), but instead our political masters preferred to rely on news management and the apathy of MPs, the media and the public to look beyond the "world's most professional army" (they need to be given the kit provided) tag truly earned by "Our Boys" - and who would allow a family member to travel in a Snatch Landrover?
