Excellent point. It did cross my mind earlier in the week that Sean Mercer (who murdered Rhys Jones) will doubtless have realised by now that if he wnated to get away with it his best bet would have been...to join the police.
I doubt if Mercer has the capacity to realise anything. Besides, there's a significant difference between murder (albeit of an unintended victim) and manslaughter by symstems failure. But I take your implied point about the state protecting its own "in the public interest".
